Most Common Problems with Hi-Lo Trailer (Solution Included)

Since 1955, Hi-Lo Trailers Worldwide has been creating trailers. The newest trailers from the company are small in size. The trailers also feature the true hydraulic over electric lift system.

In their 67-year-old run, the trailers from the company have faced many common problems. These are lifts getting jammed, overweight, unusually high cost due to demand, low storage space, and awning deterioration.

In the table below, you can have a glance at the problems along with the solution. Read on to learn more about them.

5 Common Problems with Hi-Lo Trailer and Their Solutions:

Many customers of the trailer have faced the issues that I am about to discuss. So, the issues are:

1. Lift Gets Jammed

The Hi-Lo trailer’s lift is notorious for being frequently jammed. It sometimes gets halfway up and then gets trapped. This issue might develop when an object falls between the top and bottom sections.

This occurs when the trailer’s top section is lowered. The breakdown of the lift cable is another cause of the lift being blocked. You will be unable to travel as a result.

A faulty cable pulley might cause the cable to become stuck. The lifting system will not function if the safety bar is bent.

The Fix:

First of all, go down into the trailer with a flashlight to investigate it. Examine the region for any broken guide blocks on the guide tracks’ outside edges.

The broken guide block must be replaced. If the cable pulley is damaged, it should be changed as well.

You should also inspect the RV from underneath. If the safety bar is severely bent, it should be replaced as well. If necessary, seek expert assistance.

2. Trailer Too Heavy for Towing

The Hi-Lo trailers are known to be more aerodynamic than most of the other coaches. But the downside is the excessive weight. The drive that carries the trailer vertically puts a lot of weight on the trailer.

If the trailer is too heavy, your truck has to handle a lot of pressure. As a result, the tow bar can break or cause problems.

The weight of the entire body is also heavier than other RVs since the design is old school.

The Fix:

The trailer’s weight cannot be reduced. You can maintain your storage area spacious by shedding some pounds. However, you should always examine the tow bar.

If the tow bar exhibits any signs of deterioration, it should be replaced right away. You should also get a more costly and stronger tow bar that can support the weight for an extended time.

Keeping the trailer hitched to your truck when it is not needed is also harmful to the tow bar.

3. Unusually High Cost

The trailers cost more than twice their size compared to other trailers. The reason for the overpriced trailer is the high user demand and low production.

Prices have risen after the business stopped production in 2010. You can easily obtain better and more sophisticated RVs for the price of a standard Hi-Lo trailer.

The Fix:

Although the price had dropped slightly once they resumed production, it quickly rose again. The only way to solve this problem is for the company to continue producing trailers.

My advice to you is to look for alternative trailers at the same pricing. Other RVs with the same characteristics may be acquired for half the price of any Hi-Lo trailer.

4. Low Storage

In comparison to contemporary RV models, Hi-Lo trailers have extremely little storage capacity. The area beneath the RV’s floor may be used to store tools and equipment.

Aside from that, you don’t have much room to bring goods with you. As a result, you must get rid of a lot of necessary items before embarking on any journey.

The Fix:

You cannot entirely resolve this issue, as you also could not with the prior one. When traveling in Hi-Lo trailers, you must accurately calculate your possessions. You can always keep some items in your truck.

If you need more storage, you can add a storage component. However, this will only let you keep small and personal items. Other RVs with more storage should be considered.

5. Awning Deterioration

Most of the Hi-Lo trailers are old of age. As a result, the fabric of the awning becomes damaged due to weather, wearing, and tearing.

If you notice any rip in the fabric, you can patch it up as a temporary solution. But it will eventually fall apart. Newer rips and cracks will begin to appear. The arms and strings can also become damaged quickly.

The awning fabric can also stretch over time. So, if the fabric becomes loose, you have to address the issue.

The Fix:

You should inspect the top of your awning from time to time after taking it out. Get rid of any dirt or debris before rolling it back in. If you notice any tearing or ripping, replace the fabric immediately.

Getting higher-quality fabric is always better if you live in rainy areas. Also, the sun can deteriorate the awning heavily. So, keep an eye out for any sun damage.

If the arms or the roller are damaged, you should repair or replace them. Since the exact replacement is hard to find, you should take the trailer to the nearest RV shop.

What Majority of the Users Feel?

The Hi-Lo trailers can be hard to get your hands on because of user demand. People are very satisfied with the RVs although many of them are old models.

The Hi-Lo trailers have received 3.8 out of 5 from many user reviews on the RV Insider website.

Since the trailers were discontinued in 2010, the demands have raised along with the price. So, keep in mind that although the trailers lack modern features, they can be very pricey.

Final Thoughts

Hi-Lo is famous for its telescopic hydraulic lift system. They have been manufacturing the RVs for a long time.

Although discontinued, they have started to manufacture the RVs again. But as of 2021, they are out of active production.

So, if you are planning to buy one, I hope that the problems that I have mentioned will help you to make a decision. If you face any of these problems, be sure to follow the guide.
